Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD)

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a degenerative eye disease affecting the macula, the central region of the retina responsible for detailed vision. AMD is the leading cause of severe, irreversible vision loss in people over 60. There are two main types of AMD: dry (atrophic) AMD, the more common form, characterized by yellow deposits (drusen) beneath the macula and gradual retinal atrophy that progresses slowly over several years; and wet (exudative) AMD, a less common but more severe form marked by the abnormal growth of blood vessels beneath the macula. These vessels may leak fluid or blood, causing distortion and rapid, sudden loss of central vision.
